Objective:

Students will use writing to explore the passage of time and the character changes in the novel

Structure:

In these four chapters, we've seen a number of characters whom we haven't seen since Part One. Make a list on the board; it should include Alex's mother, Alex's father, the old man, Billyboy, Dim, and the writer. Ask students if these characters have changed, and if so, how. Are these surface-level changes or deeper changes? How do you know?

Ask each student to pick one of the characters on the list (of course, it's acceptable if several students pick the same character). They are going to write a story about...
