Should Alex have ceded his leadership to Georgie? Why or why not?

With hindsight, some students may think that Alex should indeed have ceded his leadership since his droogs abandoned him based (in part) on his egotism and insistence on being in charge. Others may think that it wouldn't have mattered: if Georgie were the leader, he might still have chosen to leave Alex alone in the same way, and in addition, having multiple boys in the room makes it at least equally likely that the woman would be killed.
