Chapter 3 - Cells and Tissues - Review Questions - Page 134: 37

Answer

Lysosomes serve as digestors of cells. They eat harmful pathogens and unnecessary parts cells. To digest them, lysosomes contain several dangerous digestive enzymes, which can kill the cells if released. Inflammation and cell damage can weaken the lysosomal membrane, which prevents the digestive enzymes from leaking into the cell. Anti-inflammatory drugs like Hydrocortisone stabilizes the lysosomal membrane, thus limiting the quantity of digestive enzymes leaked into the cell. This reduces further cell damage and inflammation.
