Chapter 3 - Cells and Tissues - Review Questions - Page 134: 27

Answer

Characteristics of epithelial tissue : 1. Epithelial tissue is made up mostly of cells unlike other tissues, which are separated by extracellular matters. 2. Epithelial tissue can also regenerate its cells. 3. Epithelial tissue does not have any blood vessels. 4. Epithelial tissue has a basement membrane. Functions of epithelial tissue: 1. Absorption: Epithelial tissue, having one layer of cells, are good for absorption. For example, The small intestine contains epithelial tissues for absorbing nutrients. 2. Filtration: Epithelial tissues are also good for filtration by selectively allowing molecules to pass through them. For example, the kidneys have epithelial lining for filtration. 3. Protection: Multiple layered epithelial tissues are useful for protection against physical stress, water loss etc. For example, the outer layer of skin. 4. Secretion: Epithelial tissue also forms the glands of the body, which secretes required substances. For example, sweat glands.
