Chapter 4 - Writing Linear Functions - 4.2 - Writing Equations in Point-Slope Form - Exercises - Page 185: 11

Answer

$y=2x-5$

Work Step by Step

Let $(x_{1},y_{1}) =(1,-3)$ and $(x_{2},y_{2})=(3,1)$ Slope $m=\frac{y_{2}-y_{1}}{x_{2}-x_{1}}=\frac{1-(-3)}{3-1}=\frac{4}{2}=2$ Point-slope form is $y-y_{1}=m(x-x_{1})$ Using the values of slope $m$ and point $(3,1)$, we get $y-1=2(x-3)$ Solving the equation for $y$, we get the equation of line in slope-intercept form. $y=2x-6+1=2x-5$
