Past Life
The opening of the film shows that Jeff has started a new life with a gas station he owns and a new girl he loves. But when Joe comes to town he's dragged back into his past life. The theme tells us that there is nowhere we can hide from our past where it won't catch up with us. Unfortunately for Jeff he finds this out, and pays for it with his life in the end. He does his best to come clean to Anne because he loves her. But the weight of who follows him has a heavy hand and a long memory and isn't willing to simply let things go. Thus, Jeff must face it head on as there's no way around it this time, nor any place to run.
Trust
Jeff has spent the majority of his life trusting himself not to trust people. The line of work he is in demands that he have the proof to back up what he's told. But when love gets mixed in he decides to trust Kathie, and by so doing he's framed for murder. After finding a quiet place to settle down, Jeff meets Ann and finally has a woman whom he can truly confide in. Ironically, he hasn't told her the whole truth about who he is. And she must trust him that he hasn't killed anyone, and he has to trust her in order to tell her everything about his past in order that they two of them can make it together.
Betrayal
Another major theme in this film is betrayal. Kathie is the queen of betrayal in this film. She steals $40,000 from Whit and runs off. Then convinces Jeff that she didn't take the money when the truth is that she did. She even kills Jeff's partner and is willing to blame it all on him so that she doesn't go to jail. But when she gets caught up in multiple murders trying to frame Jeff and stop him from sending out evidence she betrays Whit's trust once more and this time it's the last time. Though he is on the receiving end, and he pays with his life. Kathie blames everyone else for what she's done and isn't willing to take any of the fall, thus she's willing to go as far as it takes to stay out of jail or wind up dead.
