Out of the Past Symbols, Allegory and Motifs

Big Sign

At the beginning of the film, we see Joe looking for Jeff. He goes to the diner across the street from Jeff's business and speaks with the woman behind the counter and tells her he saw Jeff's sign and stopped in because of the sign on his business. She says it's a small world, and Joe says, "or a big sign." His statement is a symbol that Jeff is a target and he's after him.

Letting the Storm In

While in Acapulco, Jeff falls in love with Kathie and we see them enter her home for the first time amidst a downpour. As they kiss the door blows open and we see the storm outside. This is a symbol that the couple have welcomed in a dangerous storm in the form of Whit who is still eager to keep Kathie for himself.

Sporty Shoes

Whit comes to Acapulco to see Jeff, and while there notices that Jeff has some fancy new shoes, different and more "sporty" than his usual style. The symbol is that Jeff is different than he was before he left to find Kathie in Mexico and Whit knows it.

Opening the Gate

Ann drops Jeff off at Whit's place; Jeff stands before the gate to Whit's mansion. He opens it and walks in. This is a symbol that Jeff is opening a gate to a world he's tried for a long time to keep shut.

Double

Kathie is seen making a call to find out if Eels is dead and we see her standing before the desk and her shadow looms over her. It is a symbol that Kathie is double-minded and we see this in her when she talks to Jeff in the next scene as she lies directly to his face when he knows the truth.
