Out of the Past Imagery

Out of the Past Imagery

Divided

Jeff arrives at Ann's parents home and we hear her parents yelling about him not being a good man as he doesn't even come to the door. We then see Ann on one side of the fence and Jeff on the other. The image shows us that these two lovers are separated as her parents don't want her to be with him.

Into His Mind

Jeff drives to Whit's place and on the way he tells Ann everything about his past. Tourneur zooms to a close up of Jeff before transitioning to his past. The imagery shows that we are being taken into his mind in order to be shown what he has been through and done in order to get himself into the spot he's currently in.

On Fire

Whit finds out that Kathie has been playing him all along after Jeff tells him everything. Whit stands in front of a fireplace as Kathie is in the foreground. His placement in front of the fire shows us that he is on fire, enraged by the constant betrayal of this woman and it's the last time.

Storm

In Acapulco, we watch as Jeff and Kathie fall in love. They go to her place for the first time in the midst of a storm. Their romance kindling in the midst of a storm evokes the understanding that their love is the doomed kind. The imagery shows us their fate is never to be a happy one, which in the end proves true.
