Nappily Ever After Symbols, Allegory and Motifs

Shaved Head

After attempting to fix her hair multiple times, Violet shaves it off in her bathroom. This is a symbol of Violet, perhaps for the first time, seeing herself for who she truly is without the mask of perfection she's hidden behind her entire life.

Faints

Violet's mother faints when she sees Violet's shaved head. It's a symbol that Violet's Mom is as attached to her daughter's need to be "perfect" even more so than Violet is.

Dad

Violet's Dad has quit his job and left his marriage in order to pursue a male modeling career. He comes to Violet and gives her the best encouragement she's gotten to date about her life. This is a symbol that her father understands what she's going through more than anyone else as he's chosen a less traveled path that is not in agreement with what society says a person should be.

Support Group

Violet is invited to a support group because a woman believes she has cancer. When she comes clean that she isn't a cancer survivor the head of the group tells her to "own it." This is a symbol that she can be accepted, but only if she chooses to own who she is.

No Beauty

Violet asks her boss to change from beauty accounts at the advertising agency to anything else. Eventually, Violet quits her job because she is no longer the "beauty girl" willing to use sex to sell products; rather, she is a woman who seeks to sell something good and real to the world.
