Violet's statement is given as she narrates the reality of her childhood with her mother constantly grooming her in order that she won't stand out from all of the white kids who are quick to be cruel. This sentence tells us that Violet's childhood was affected by her relationship to her mother and society all by appearances which sets up her inner and external obstacle for the film.

During an intimate moment with her boyfriend, Clint, Violet doesn't want him to touch her hair. And in an effort to ensure he doesn't, she says this statement to him, by which he abides.

Violet is sitting with her friends enjoying a glass of rose and in the midst of her conversation she eyes what she thinks is a rain cloud. The significance of this is that she's afraid her hair will get wet. With one small statement, we learn how Violet's every day is maneuvered around the things that could affect her appearance.
