Violet Jones
Violet Jones is the main character in the movie. She is a black female that believes that her life has to be perfect in order for her to be loved and accepted by society. Her hair is tightly tied to that assumption, as she thinks of natural hair as nappy and unsophisticated. She even stays perfect for her boyfriend, in hopes of him proposing to her, as he would in her perfect world.
Clint Conrad
Clint Conrad is Violet’s husband. He loves Violet and thinks that she indeed is perfect. However, he doesn’t want to marry her as she nearly is too perfect. He feels like he doesn’t know her as he doesn’t know of any of her downsides. When he sees Violet in the end of the movie, he wants her back, but she won’t take him as the person she was had changed.
Will Wright
Will Wright is the father of Zoe Wright and he is a natural hair specialist. He owns a store that is made for naturals, and he meets Violet for the first time right after her big chop. He loves a woman that can embrace what god has given her and he is a big and important part of Violet learning to love herself.
