The elements of surveillance and government are named after body parts (i.e. the finger, the eye, the ears). Describe each of the body parts and their purpose. Why do you think the author chose to name the surveillance system after body parts?
The fingers are the police officers. The eye is the visual surveillance system. The ear listens in on phone calls and does other methods of audio surveillance. The author’s description of these authoritative bodies as body parts illustrates how they all work as part of a whole. Each sector has a separate function, but they all work together as one body. This also illustrates how the regime in London in the novel is not democratic....
