    Mr Hartright first talks about "the woman who has lived in all my thoughts..." Who is this woman?

    Since Mr Hartright does not explicitly explain who this woman is, readers are left to figure it out for themselves. What did students think when they first read the line? Did they expect the woman mentioned to be the woman in white? Having read all of Walter's first section, what do they believe now? Again, there is no right answer to this question. Students can argue it as they please, as long as they are able to support their argument.
