Chapter 4 - Forces and Newton's Laws of Motion - Problems - Page 114: 22

Answer

The gravitational force between the two probe parts is $1.82\times10^{-7}N$.

Work Step by Step

1) Find the mass of these two parts: We have the weight of part 1 $W_1=11000N$ and that of part 2 $W_2=3400N$. The acceleration due to gravity on earth $g=9.8m/s^2$ $$m_1=\frac{W_1}{g}=1.12\times10^3kg$$ $$m_2=\frac{W_2}{g}=0.35\times10^3kg$$ 2) Find the gravitational force between these two parts We have the universal gravitational constant $G=6.67\times10^{-11}Nm^2/kg^2$ and the distance between 2 parts $r=12m$. The gravitational force between these two parts is $$F_g=G\frac{m_1m_2}{r^2}=1.82\times10^{-7}N$$
