Chapter 30
Robert starts thinking about his grandfather, a man who he respected. This leads him to thoughts about his father, who Robert doesn’t respect. He considers his father a coward for staying in a difficult marriage and for ultimately committing suicide. Robert thinks about the gun that his father used and how he threw it away.
But then Robert starts to soften on his father. He accepts that he too feels the temptation to commit suicide rather than continue to endure. This realization leads him to admit that he must blow up the bridge, even though the mission is doomed.
