Chapter 23
Four more scouts come near the camp and Agustín prepares to shoot them with the machine gun. But Robert stops him, letting the scouts leave. When Agustín asks why, Robert points out that the noise may draw more people, a point proven when a larger group passes by the cave. After the Fascists leave, Robert sends Anselmo to follow them. He thinks about how much he respects Anselmo for his refusal to kill and is impressed by Agustín’s willingness to kill. The increased tension makes Robert wonder if Pablo was right and that the bridge cannot be destroyed.
