The arrival of even more planes amplifies the rebels’ fear, and even Pilar is filled with sadness. She regrets how much her memories of Finito upset Pablo, but she assures Robert that she is in charge and he will not be harmed by anyone. She admits that she too loves life, but not enough to diminish her loyalty to the Republic. When Robert goes into the cave to kiss Maria, some of the other soldiers get upset, but Pilar tells them that the two are engaged.
