Contradictory worlds
Everybody at least once in his life was wondering, what his life would look like if he made another choice on time. This question as a rule, remains unanswered, because so to say, what is done cannot be undone, and unfortunately (or maybe fortunately) we cannot travel in time. the man in a long leather coat is imagining possible variants of his life according to the choice he makes: in one world he decides that he must see the woman he fell in love with again; in the other he decides not to see her again and in the third one he also decides that he should see her again, but this meeting didn’t lead to their further relationship. Each of these variants of future are different, each of these three futures are real, says the author. When we choose some option, automatically there appear an infinity of worlds with the same people there but they have different fates in each of those words. The possible scenario of our life depends on our choice and we are the vehicles of our future, no matter in which of these worlds.
Time and people
Do people actually control the time, or this is just an illusion of control? In the book there are different variations of time and in each of these variations time effects people but people do not have any influence on time. Why? Because people are unpredictable, time is predictable, “while people can doubted, time cannot be doubted. While people brood, time skips ahead without looking back”. Time is a measure of life, how we would live without it? Time makes people feel comfortable; we depend on it and we need it.
Time and order
Everything in this world has an order because order is the law of nature. Philosophers have argued that without order time would lack meaning. The future would be indistinguishable from the past. Sequences of events would be just so many random scenes from a thousand novels. History would be indistinct, “like the mist slowly gathered by treetops in evening”. So, it becomes clear that time and order are very closely connected – they are parts of each other because time has an order itself – seconds, minutes, hours, etc. and order is also impossible without time because it is a kind of measuring the common order; thus, they are interconnected as well. In a world where there is no order, time will also be neglected – people won't care to come at work in time or to spend their time on something important. If there will be no order then time is also useless because time is an embodiment of order.
Memories
The theme of memories is one of the leading issues in the story, because time and memories are interconnected. We connect our memories with the time when it happened, but imagine the world, where is no memories. In such a world there is no past or future. There is only present, the past exists only in books and documents: “In order to know himself, each person carries his own Book of Life, which is filled with the history his of life. By reading its pages daily, he can relearn the identity of his parents, whether he was born high or born low, whether he did well or did poorly in school, whether he had accomplished anything in his life”. The world without memories is senseless, memories enrich our lives and make it better.
