Your Name (2016 Film) Symbols, Allegory and Motifs

Red thread between lovers

The movie shows the red thread throughout in connection to Taki and Mitsuha. In East Asian belief red thread is a symbol of a fated love, of a destiny of two lovers meeting each other and being together forever. It is a symbol of true love. The love between Taki and Mitsuha is intertwined with this red thread.

Threading

Threading is a symbol of written fate in the movie. Mitsuha's grandmother explains the meaning of threading as being Musubi, which means calling to the gods. She explains that tying thread is Musubi, connecting people is Musubi. Hitoha reveals that braided threads are the gods art and represent the flow of time itself. They twist, tangle, unravel and connect again. It is up to Mitsuha and Taki to unravel the threads of time and connect them again.

Kataware-Doki-Twilight

Kataware-Doki, which means twilight plays an important part of the movie. It is described as a mirror to another world. At twilight, the door to another world opens, and it exists a possibility to meet a person from another world or another time in the case of Mitsuha and Taki.
