    Why did Treplev challenge Trigorin to a duel?

    It seems that it was supposed to be over Nina, but students should note that Treplev is jealous of Trigorin's relationship with Nina, with Arkadina, and with writing. He's upset by Trigorin's success, upset that both Arkadina and Nina seem so in thrall to it, and he wants to be able to show that he's more powerful than Trigorin in some way, to win against him at something.
