What does Arkadina's behavior with Masha show about her character?
It displays her vanity and arrogance: it's important to her to point out how much better she looks than Masha, and to emphasize how it's her own choices and interests that make her that way. It also shows her lack of sensitivity: we've seen from the previous act that Masha is clearly suffering for her love, and Arkadina doesn't consider or notice Masha's feelings. She also seems a little delusional or unconnected to reality: as a forty-three-year-old, could she really play a girl of fifteen?
