Why do you think Masha might be in mourning for her life?
At this point, Masha says little, but it's a powerful note on which to begin the play. Students may speculate that Masha has depression (based on the inability to enjoy life), that she loves someone else (based on her refusal of Medvedenko's declaration of love), and that she's dissatisfied with the way she lives and sees no way out of it (based on her flat affect and her lack of interest in what Medvedenko says). She also seems hostile to most people, as is clear in the way she responds to Sorin.
