The Guide is a novel by Indian author R.K. Narayan set in the fictional town of Malgudi, South India. The novel was published in 1958 and follows the life of a man, Raju, as he slowly becomes one of the most famous holy men in India. Through the use of flashbacks, we learn that Raju starts first as a shopkeeper and then as a tour guide in his hometown of Malgudi. There, he meets a mistreated married woman, Rosie, and the two begin an affair. Raju helps Rosie to establish her a career as a dancer; as her manager, he guides her into prominence, but he becomes more controlling of her in the process.
