The umbrella is a delicate object which Fenella’s grandmother repeatedly reminds her might be breakable. It symbolizes Fenella herself, who is in a delicate state because her mother has just died. Fenella’s grandmother is taking great care with her, just like the umbrella. It can also be a symbol for the fragility of life itself, where at any moment a person’s loved ones might be lost.
