    Both Stanley and Jonathan’s swims are ruined. What ruins them?

    Stanley’s swim is ruined when he discovers that he is not the first person out for a swim. He is also annoyed by Jonathan, who he thinks talks too much and about topics that he considers trivial. Jonathan’s swim is ruined because he stayed in too long. Ironically, they both ruin each others’ swims; Stanley isn’t the first one out because of Jonathan, and Jonathan stays in too long because he is thinking about how much he pities Stanley for his rigidness and inability to have fun.
