How does Mansfield create a sense of tension for Reginald?
Mansfield creates tension for Reginald by repeating both his own sense of unworthiness and the depth of his longing on his journey to propose to Anne. Tension is also increased when we are introduced to the character of his mother, who is drawn as both a fairly unpleasant but also needy woman. We are given the impression that his life without Anne is fairly grim. Knowing the depth of his love for her, this creates contrast for the present and possible future, increasing our sense of tension before he asks her to marry him.
