Chapter 8 - Special Senses - Review Questions - Page 332: 42

Answer

When we focus our eyes on an object, light from that object falls onto the fovea centralis of the retina. The fovea centralis is an area that is dense in cones but lacking in rods. Cones are used for viewing color and bright-light objects. Faint stars are very dimly lit, so if the light from them falls onto the fovea, they will not be detected because the rods, which specialize in detecting dim light, are not present in the fovea.
