So Far from God by Ana Castillo pursues the lives of Sofi and her four daughters Esperanza, Caridad, Fe, and La Loca. They dwell in the small town of Tome, New Mexico, and suffer hardship after hardship. The novel moves to and fro in time smoothly, regularly visiting similar periods more than once to provide more information.

At eighteen, Sofi weds Domingo, a notorious gambler. After the birth of La Loca, Sofi exiles Domingo from the family farm when he starts to gamble away the land she acquired from her father. For the following twenty years, the family hears nothing from Domingo, and Sofi raises the four young girls all alone, until Domingo's baffling return. At fifty-three, Sofi turns into the unofficial mayor of the town and sanctions huge financial and social change in the community. After the demise of La Loca, Sofi establishes M.O.M.A.S., an association where mothers of saints and martyrs can assemble and share encounters.

La Loca becomes sick at three years of age and is pronounced dead. She then becomes alive once again during her very own funeral (or else was erroneously considered dead in any case), climbs to the church’s rooftop, and claims she has made a trip to paradise, heck, and limbo. From that time on, she is isolated and never ventures a long way from her mother's home. She has the endowment of premonitions just as recuperating powers. In her twenties, La Loca contracts AIDS and kicks the bucket. She is worshiped as a holy person by the community and visits earth in soul form after her demise.

Fe drives an ordinary, calm life as a bank teller until her fiancé breaks up with her. She spends the following year of her life screaming continually. In the wake of recouping wonderfully, she returns to work at the bank and ultimately weds her cousin, Casimiro. Wanting a higher pay, Fe begins working at Acme International, a factory that uses dangerous synthetic substances to clean machine parts. Because of chemical exposure, Fe contracts cancer and dies at twenty-seven.

After Caridad's husband is unfaithful to her, she leaves on a way of overwhelming drinking and easygoing sex. One night, she is severely assaulted and deserted on the side of the road. She spends the following year in Sofi's home simultaneously Fe fights with her separation. The two are phenomenally mended on that night, and Caridad is returned to her previous self. She is likewise talented with vision and recuperating powers and is guided in the methods for the Curandera, or folk healer, by doña Felicia. Caridad falls in love with a Native Acoma lady named Esmeralda; the two bounce off the side of plateau together and are assimilated into the earth.

Esperanza seeks her education and turns into a TV journalist. She is sent on task to Saudi Arabia, where she eventually disappears and is pronounced dead. After her demise, no matter she visits her family in soul form.
