So Far From God Analysis

It is a magical realism written by a North American Feminist. The novel has been narrated by an omniscient, third person narrator, who has given his/her insight regarding the events in the lives of characters. It is a tragicomedy which encompasses the trials and the survival of Sofia and her daughters. The novel has given an account of two decades in the life of Sofia and her family through constant flashbacks regarding the events in their lives. The struggles of the mother along with her four daughters Esperanza, Caridad, Fe, and La Loca have been depicted in the novel by mentioning the betrayal, sexism, exploitation and abandonment. The theme of resurrection and the resulting worshipping by the society have been highlighted through the character of La Loca.

The supernatural elements have been mingled with natural imagery to reiterate the concept of resurrection in the novel. The author has also alluded towards the destruction caused by the dangerous chemicals in various factories. The death of Fe depicts the negligence of authorities and the improper measures taken by the government. The callous nature and the materialistic approach of the factory honors are evident from their priorities of making wealth above life and health. The social exploitation is evident from the case of Caridad, who was sexually abused by men even to the point of near-death experience.

The elements of a comedy and folklore have been integrated with the social problems and environmental crisis. The novel also demonstrates the challenges faced by a female and a mother in her life. It propagates the notion of strong will and endurance despite of facing the trials and tribulations. The author has also incorporated the religious notions and the references to various saints.
