Supernatural Imagery
The resurrection of La Loca after her death invokes supernatural imagery. She died at the age of three and suddenly got up at her funeral. People were surprised after watching her climbing the rooftop of the church. After resurrecting, La Loca claimed that she visited paradise, limbo and heck. Her confession also portrays her as a supernatural human being because it was astonishing for the folks. The simpletons started worshiping her as a holy saint and she isolated herself from the community. She died again at the age of twenty because of suffering from AIDS. After her demise, she visited the earth in the form of soul and her return depicts supernatural imagery.
Images of Death
The images of death are recurrent in the novel and they have portrayed through the deaths of all the daughters of Sofia. La Loca died twice in her life and she was resurrected after her first demise. The author has depicted her as lying in her coffin and then rising in her funeral and climbing the rooftop. After she reached the age of twenty, she is portrayed as dying because of AIDS. Fe is depicted as dying of exposure to the dangerous chemicals, while working in a factory. Esperanza is presented as disappearing while working as a journalist in a war, but it revealed that she died there.
Images of Violence
The imagery of violence has been depicted at several instances in the novel. The images of war portray violence and the death of Esperanza was also the result of a violent act during war, which she was covering as a journalist. Caridad suffered violence at the hands of men after getting indulged in sexual relationships and alcohol. She is attacked by a beastly man and she was found at the side of road in a vulnerable condition. The images of social violence are evident from the job of Fe, who was working in a factory. She got contaminated to harmful chemicals which were being used in the factory for the purpose of cleaning the parts of machinery. This attempt of cleaning demonstrates the violent murder of people despite of knowing the horrendous effects of the chemicals.
