Lost in Translation (2003 Film) Symbols, Allegory and Motifs

Whiskey

Bob signs on for a whiskey commercial in Tokyo. The whiskey is a symbol that he is using this opportunity to drown out the reality of his problems in life rather than dealing with them head on because they are painful.

$2,000,000

Bob is being paid $2,000,000 to film a commercial for a Japanese whiskey company. He takes the money while his marriage is on the rocks and his son's birthday is coming up. It is a symbol that he believes he is doing something good by making money when in reality he's merely running away from his life and pretending he's doing the right thing.

Jazz Singer

Bob sleeps with the hotel Jazz Singer after having started a platonic relationship with Charlotte. This is a symbol of Bob's reluctance to create a meaningful and lasting relationship as he's wiling to betray it so quickly.

Bar

Charlotte meets Bob in the bar of the hotel where they are both staying. The bar is a symbol of loneliness as it represents a place where strangers gather to drown their lives with the alcohol of their choosing.

Last Moment

In the last moment of the film, we watch as Bob says something to Charlotte as she leaves. This is a symbol of a turning point, both for Charlotte and Bob. For Charlotte it is a point of experience from which she can grow, and for Bob it is a point of hope as he may be becoming a man who owns up to his life rather than letting it pass by as he hurts people.
