Study Objectives

If all of the elements of this lesson plan are employed, students will develop the following powers, skills, and understanding:

    Students will become well-acquainted with the historical context for Jazz, including the Harlem Renaissance and the history of slavery and Jim Crow in the Southern United States, and understanding how this historical framing comes to bear on the development of character and narrative.

    Students will develop presentation and time management skills through long-term projects and presentations.

    Students will be able to analyze a complex, multi-layered narrative and construct written and verbal arguments about that narrative.
