Evie, Eight

Evie lost her mother very young, her mother died in water. Despite that Evie feels drawn to the sea, instead of scared of it, because she wants to prove to herself that she can cheat death, as though she were-which is conveniently said like this to justify the title and foreshadow the upcoming events-immortal.

Lady Agnes, Nine

This is an excerpt from Lady Agnes's journal in which she talks about having visions of a strangely dressed girl that disturbingly looks a lot like her. We can guess at this point, from the visions that Evie's been having that Lady Agnes, in her own time, was having visions from the future, from Evie.

There can be no harm, surely, in something so beautiful?

Lady Agnes, Thirteen

It is an excerpt from Lady Agnes's journal where she admiringly talks about the Mystic Way and what wonders it allowed her to create with her own hands. Deep down, Agnes knows that this harmless beauty can go in a completely different direction, as seen from how Sebastian's been behaving, and she is constantly trying to convince herself otherwise.
