Evie Johnson
Evie Johnson is the protagonist of the novel. She is a sixteen year-old girl that is suddenly forced to leave her old life behind and begin a new one at Wyldcliffe, where a lot of strange events are ready to be unfolded before her.
Sebastian James Fairfax
Sebastian is the mysterious boy that Evie runs into, when she first comes to Wyldcliffe, which will go on to change her life even more. He's described as a handsome but somewhat sickly looking boy. He seems to be haunted by something terrible from his past, something which he tries to hide from Evie. Sebastian's character could be described from two different perspectives, two different time periods. The past with Agnes, where he seems arrogant, greedy and cruel and the present with Evie where he's facing the consequences of his deeds pressing on him and his decision to sacrifice himself for his love.
High Mistress/Mrs. Hartle
Mrs. Hartle is the High Mistress of the Abbey boarding school. She is a cold, strict and cruel character. She is also the head of the Sebastian's coven, and she is ready to do anything for her own gain. She could be seen as the main antagonist of the novel.
Helen
Helen is Mrs. Hartle's daughter who possesses special powers, and who was brought to the Abbey school by her mother only to be used for those powers. At first, she is described as a strange, even crazy, but when Evie discovers the truth about her she understands her actions. She is a good-natured character forced into evil, which she tries to redeem by helping Evie.
Sarah
Sarah is Evie's first friend at Abbey school. She is a nature-loving character who likes to take care of animals, especially horses. She is a descendant from a traveling Romany family and has special powers, just like Helen.
Lady Agnes
Lady Agnes is Evie's ancestor and their fates are intertwined. They both appear as visions in each other's present. Lady Agnes was a powerful and good-natured witch, who rather sacrificed her powers instead of letting them be used for evil purposes. Lady Agnes is present in Evie's time, helping her on her path to fight evil.
