Making up one’s mind
The boy is plagues by the different hunches which try to convince him to follow them. He becomes enamored with all the different hunches he meets and therefore it makes it more difficult to make his mind up. Indeed, he describes this feeling as taking “a lot of shoving and hot bargaining and selling”,conveying images of an internal discussion within his very self. Ultimately, he Is successful in doing so.
Disappearance of the Hunches
When the boy makes his mind up, he chooses the Munch Hunch and goes off to eat something. By making his mind up, the other hunches disappear. This adds to the notion that the hunches are simply a concoction of children’s imaginations and are specific to individual. No one else can see or experience the hunches because they live inside the boy’s mind.
The Unseen Hunch
This hunch is actually the boy’s mind playing tricks on him. The unseen Hunch claims that the boy’s “mind is murky-mooshy!” and goes on to describe him in a negative manner as a “wonter” and a “donter”. The hunch is pretty cruel to the boy, and makes mean insults towards him, like “you’re hopeless”.
Nowhere Hunch
The nowhere hunch is misleading and tricks the boy into following him “in circles till we wore the rug right through.” The Hunch does not care for the boy in making his decision, but instead distracts him and keeps him from being enticed by the other Hunches.
