"The book speaks of a spiritual presence. A thing of evil that roams the forests and the dark powers of man's domain. It is through the recitation of the books passages that this dark spirit is given license to possess the living. Included here are the phonetic pronunciation of those passages."
Knowby is an archeologist that is heard on a tape recorder played by Ash when he and Linda get to the cabin in the woods. His statement here is full of irony because as he recites the passages he is unleashing the evil forces.
"I gotta get a grip on myself here."
Ash has just come to the bridge that leads out of the woods and sees that it is destroyed. He's had to kill his girlfriend and was possessed by a demon the previous night. This line tells us that he knows he needs to figure a way out of this and it won't happen if he is freaking out.
"Probably nothing...but just possibly a doorway to another world."
Annie is Knowby's daughter. She's arrived at the airport and when asked what she thinks her father's translation has yielded this statement is her response. And after Ash's encounter with the demon we know that the book has unleashed a demon already.
