Mother’s death
When Ella’s mother died, Lady Eleanor’s casket is made of “gleaming mahogany that is carved with designs of fairies and elves”. Mother’s mouth is “stern, the opposite of its look in life”. Moreover, her face is empty, which is awful. However, the worst thing is “a creak as the coffin lid goes down and the dry click”, when it closes. The image of Lady Eleanor’s funeral gives an impression of Ella’s heartbreak, because she has lost the dearest person in her life.
Castle from the elves
Once, Ella gets a present. It is a porcelain castle no bigger than her two fists, “with six small towers, each ending in a miniature candleholder”. “A gossamer thread of china with laundry” is strung between windows in each of two towers. Here are “a man’s hose, a robe and a baby’s pinafore”. Everything is so tiny. The image of the castle gives an impression of the difficult job of elves, who are marvelous potters.
Areida
When Ella first meets Areida, she has a pink gown. She plaits her “dark hair in many braids” and pulls the braids into a knot on the top of her head. Areida’s skin has a color of “cinnamon with a tint of raspberry” in her cheeks. Her lips curve up naturally thus she has “a pleased and contented look”. The image of Areida gives an impression of the odd, cheerful, and kind girl.
