Bride and Prejudice Summary

Bride and Prejudice Summary

Lalita is a young woman that lives in Amritsar, India, and is looking for a husband. Though her parent want her to marry a wealthy man that can provide her a good life and security, Lalita would prefer to take her time to find someone that she loves.

When she is a party one night, she thinks she has found that person. She spots William Darcy, who just happens to be a wealthy American traveller that knows the area well. Of course, her parents would approve of the decision to marry Darcy, but she is offended when he denies her offer to dance with him.

Lalita travels to Goa, India with some of the people from the party, like Mrs. Bakshi, and Lalita's sister, Jaya. On the way to Goa, Lalita meets another man named Wickham. Distressed about her bad luck with Darcy, she is not sure that she can trust him. However, she tells Wickham about Darcy, and he says that he too once knew Darcy. According to Wickham, he is simply a horrible person to be around.

A bit too quickly, Lalita and Wickham become friends, and Lalita invites him back home to Goa. Her excuse in coaxing him to come home with her is to see the Golden Temple, but she is obviously trying to get him to marry her.

Back in Amritsar, the Lalita runs into another problem. Her mother, although along with her on the trip to Goa and knowing of Wickham, has found a man that she wants her to marry. Kohli Saab, a man from the US, first thinks that Jaya is the fairer sister. However, Mrs. Bakshi (Lalita's mother) tells him that Jaya is engaged and he should chase Lalita instead.

Frequent feuds occur where each man seemingly can and then cannot become the bride of Lalita. Kohli, for example, marries Chandra, and Lalita is outraged. Wickham says that he has to go back to the United States, and will be unable to marry Lalita. The only one left standing is Darcy, who Lalita once hated. However, she lets go of her first impression and marries him, and in the final scene of the film they can be seen sitting on an elephant together.
