Bride and Prejudice Imagery

Guitar

This guitar is featured in many scenes when Lalita is sad or is expressing her longing for love. Indeed, it is even noted by Darcy’s sister, despite never having met Lalita. The guitar is a representation of both the desire to be set free as well as her musical talents.

Stick dancing

This is shown throughout many of the wedding scenes, and highlights the different in culture and upbringing between Lalita and Darcy. However, when Darcy uses the sticks himself he is showing that he willing to learn about Indian culture for Lalita.

First Class Seat

This is a key feature of the film, as it shows Darcy’s willingness to try and live Lalita’s life for once. When he gives up his seat to Mrs Bakshi, he has done something truly kind and once-in-a-lifetime for a poor woman, which opens up his relationship with Lalita.

Snake dance

The snake dance performed by Lalita’s younger sister, is one of comic relief as well as foreshadowing the distress to come later, with Balraj breaking off his relationship with Jaya. The Bakshi’s indeed are a different type of family than others are used to, but this moment truly highlights this.
