Before I Fall Symbols, Allegory and Motifs

Time (motif)

Time is such an incredible thing. It is the essence and form of human being. The characters of the book waste their time on something that is not important really, without thinking about its true value. The past gives memories; the future gives hopes and dreams. However, nobody manages to live it twice. No one except Sam, who has many chances to correct her mistakes. Time gives her the opportunity to understand the true value of life, even if she is a teenager and the whole world seems to be imperfect and sophisticated.

Range Rover (symbol)

Lindsay’s car is the main symbol of the novel. At first, the reader does not observe any unforeseen situations. Sam and her friends calmly drive to school and listen to music. However, on the evening of Cupid Day, an accident happens, in which Sam dies. The car should symbolize death, but since Sam wakes up again on Cupid Day, the car symbolizes time and a portal to the past.

Mobile phone (symbol)

Every time Sam wakes up, she unlocks her phone and sees the same date – Friday, February 12, Cupid Day. The phone makes it clear that Sam has not changed her mistakes and the time loop is not destroyed. Her phone symbolizes a sign or hint that helps the main heroine to understand what she has to change.

Roses (symbol)

Sam receives roses on Cupid Day, with the most unique and beautiful one from Kent McFuller. She got many other roses but the one that ending up meaning the most came from her love interest, not her boyfriend, Rob. Sam tries to fix what she's done wrong to Juliet by sending her roses.

The road (symbol)

As the girls cruise down the road from the party, they are in an accident. Much like life, the road offered choices.
