Alice in the Cities Imagery

Destroying the TV

At the beginning of the movie, the main character, Philip, is portrayed as being alone and traveling without any companion. At one point, he is shown destroying a TV while in a random motel room on the side of the road. This image is important because it shows how Philip was before he encountered Alice and his mother.

The mother running away

Shortly after Philip encounters the mother and daughter duo, Alice's mother decides to take off, leaving her young daughter in the care of a stranger. The mother is shown leaving the building, not stopping to look back not even once. This scene is important because it portrays the mother as an unreliable parent who does not care for her own daughter.

Eating breakfast together

After the mother left, Alice refused to speak with anyone, including Philip. Not wanting to abandon her, he takes the decision to take the young girl to Germany and try to find her grandparents. Once in Germany, the two stay for a while in a rented house. It is in this house where Alice decides to open up to Philip one morning, during breakfast, and express her hopes and fears. This scene and image are important here because it marks the moment when the two begin to grow closer to one another.

At the train station

The film ends with Philip and Alice in an unnamed train station, ready to get on the train together and start their life as a new family. This scene takes place after Philip took Alice to a police station, with the intention of leaving her there and after the two are reunited. As such, the image used here has the purpose of transmitting the idea that the two characters are ready for a new beginning.
