Day 2

Woman at Point Zero Lesson Plan

Discussion of Thought Questions

  1. 1

Why does Firdaus hate the mirror? What does it mean for her?

Firdaus has a moment of cognitive dissonance. When she looks in the mirror, she does not feel like she sees herself. “I glimpsed myself in the mirror. This also had never happened to me before. At first I did not know that it was a mirror” (25). She did not recognize her body, but she did recognize her face. Firdaus’s experience in the mirror speaks to all the different ways and moments Firdaus distances herself from her body. She separates her physical self from her sense of self.

  2. 2

Describe the rebirths or fresh starts that Firdaus experiences in this section. How do these experiences impact her character?
