This Is Where It Ends Metaphors and Similes

Description of Autumn

Sylvia used a metaphor to describe her best friend Autumn in regards to her prowess at dancing. Autumn is described as, ‘ The swallow. All grace and beauty. When Autumn dances, all her worry falls away and she shines.’ The metaphor in the description is that of referring to Autumn as a swallow. This is because Sylv likens her friend’s grace and beauty to that of a swallow.

Sylv’s Mother

Sylv’s mother had a mental condition that frequently made her disoriented. Sylv uses a simile to describe how her mother was slipping away. Mrs. Morales is described as, ‘ I can’t shake away the feeling that with everyday that passes, she slips away like starlight at dawn.’ Sylv has therefore likened her mother’s mental condition to the slipping away of starlight in the morning.

Autumn’s happiness

Sylv described how happy her friend Sylv was when they talked about dancing. The description is as follows, ‘… and when she opens up, she is the sun.’ Sylv used a metaphor to describe Autumn by calling her the sun. This is because Autumn would be very bright as the sun is.

Description of the Reporters

When the reporters came to Opportunity High School to broadcast live the shooting at the school, Chris described them as, ‘ They are vultures. ‘ This is a metaphorical statement that directly compares the reporters’ behavior to that of vultures. This is because they came to get the news of the shooting rather than help the dying and injured students.

Description of Autumn’s State of Mind

Sylv describes Autumn’s intentions as, ‘ I am the only one who knows that she’ll fly out of this cage and leave us all being and soon as she can.’ In the description, the word cage is metaphorical to the situation that Autumn was in. This is because her father was abusive and did not want her to pursue her dream of becoming a dancer.
