Setting and Context

The setting of the novel is at Opportunity High School at the beginning of a semester. The context of the novel is a senior class that is comprised of various of the characters such as Tomas, Autumn and Sylv.

Narrator and Point of View

There are various narrators in the novel. They are Tomas, Autum, Sylv and Claire. The narrators hold the view that Tyler wronged the students and parents of Opportunity High School by killing students.

Tone and Mood

The tone of the novel is the sombre one for the narrators tell the tale of a school shooting. The mood of the novel is melancholy as the story of Tyler, his depression and his eventual actions of shooting school students is very sad and depressing.

Protagonist and Antagonist

The protagonists of the novel are the narrators and other students of Opportunity High School who suffered when Tyler went to the school and started shooting at students. The antagonist of the novel is Tyler who killed thirty nine students and teachers of the school and injured twenty five of them.

Major Conflict

The major conflict of the novel is Tyler's anger and grief over the loss of his mother. This leads him to kill students of Opportunity High School and commit suicide.

Climax

The climax is arrived at when Tyler who had killed various students and teachers shoots himself. This signals the end of danger to the terrified students, teachers and parents.

Foreshadowing

When Tyler killed Nyah, Autumn wished he would shoot himself and die. At the climax of the story, Tyle shoots himself and dies.

Understatement

Autumn and Sylv understated their relationship when everyone thought that they were just friends. They are in love and care for each other very deeply.

Allusions

There is historical allusion to past events of the school such as their lantern night. The lantern night was a time when seniors would congregate and celebrate their years at the school. The night was alluded to when the students of Opportunity High School had a different lantern night to grieve those students who had been murdered by Tyler.

Imagery

The description of Opportunity High School by Claire as, ' From the outside, Opportunity High School looks like an old fashioned building with its red brick walls and large windows.' The narrator builds visual imagery by describing the school buildings.

Paradox

Sylv remarked that, ' I will kill him even though he would kill me first.' regarding Tyler. This is a paradoxical statement for it would not be possible for Sylv to kill Tyler when she was dead.

Parallelism

The narrator draws a parallel between Tyler and Autumn in regards to how they dealt with the grief of losing their mother. Tyler killed students at Opportunity High School whereas Autumn focused on her dream to be a dancer.
