Along with Jules Verne, H.G. Wells is considered one of the founders of popular science fiction. His other main works of science fiction include The Time Machine (1895), The Island of Dr. Moreau (1896), and The Invisible Man (1897).
Wells's writing was observant and descriptive--he tried to portray events as objectively as possible. He believed in the "novel of ideas" and wrote works that were driven by intellectual concerns. Writers who were more concerned with the emotional, interior lives of their characters—such as Virginia Woolf—proclaimed Wells their literary antithesis.
