    What is the symbolism of Claire’s panther?

    Astute readers will note the clear connection to Alfred, since "panther" was her nickname for him. Panthers are powerful and wild, but Claire's panther is pretty pitiful - it's caged, a pet, just one of Claire's many possessions. When the panther escapes, and is hunted down by the bloodthirsty townspeople (shot dead in front of Alfred's store, no less), it serves as a clear foreshadowing of Ill's fate.
