Objective:

Students will do a close reading of a passage.

Common Core Standards:

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.9-10.4, CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.9-10.1

Structure:

To begin the activity, show students an interview with Colson Whitehead. Then, lead students through a short discussion by asking the following questions:

· Did you learn anything new about the book from this interview?

· What are your take-aways from the interview?

· Does seeing the author’s face and hearing his voice change the book for you at all?
