A.Q.M.D

It is an initialism for Air Quality Management District. They are the ones in charge for the improvement of air quality within an area.

Baryshnikov

Mikhail Baryshnikov is a famous Russian-American actor and classical dancer, ballet to be particular, of the '70s and '80s. He is now known for his exceptional choreography skills.

Bogart

An informal term for hogging or taking things for your own benefit without thinking about the effects it has on other people.

Candlestick

A candle holder that is often thin and tall. They are typically used in restaurants to create a classy and romantic atmosphere. The body of Lumière, the candle character in Beauty and the Beast, is an example of a candlestick.

Catalytic converter

A device found in the engine of most gasoline-powered cars. This allows the toxic by-products of combustion to react and form into less harmful compounds (i.e. carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and water vapor). Cars fueled by hydrogen (fuel cell cars) and electricity (all-electric cars) do not have catalytic converters as they do not emit any hazardous substances.

Collusion

Secretly working with others in order to sabotage other people.

Crusader

A person who advocates for a change in politics, society or religion. This term often refers to the soldiers who fought in the Crusades, a series of religious wars that took place during the medieval era.

Discretionary revelation

This phrase simply means revealing information, even though it's a secret, because you think that it is the right thing to do.

Fascist crony

A fascist crony is a close friend or companion of yours that supports or believes in the idea of fascism. Fascism is a type of government where all the power is given to a single person; the person in authority basically has dictatorial power.

Lo and behold

A phrase often used to present a situation that is surprising and unbelievable. For example, meeting an old friend of yours at a random place.

Loon

An informal term for someone who is crazy or insane. It is most likely derived from the word "lunatic."

Mammon

Mammon is a biblical allusion referring to the fact that money is the root of all evil. A person whose actions are greatly influenced by greed and wealth may be called a mammon.

Nuanced

Something that is expressed in a way which gathers little to none attention; it is lowkey.

Omar Sharif

Omar Sharif is an Egyptian film and television actor who became famous in the 1960s.

Projectionalist

The person who manually operates the projectors used in movie theaters in the past. Today, movie theaters do not need projectionalists because most theaters use digital projectors and most movies are distributed via hard drives.

Reach for the brass ring

This is an idiomatic phrase. It does not literally mean to reach for a brass-colored ring. Rather, it means to dream big and strive for the best.

Recognizance

The release of a criminal defendant from custody without having to post bail. This is often the case for minor civil and criminal penalties such as traffic violations and trespassing.

Schwanz

This is a German slang term for the male reproductive organ.

Spiral fracture

A type of fracture where the bones are completely separated due to intense twisting or torsion. Consequently, this is also referred to as a torsion fracture.

Sucker-punched

The state of being punched or hit by someone unexpectedly.

Ventriloquist

A person who talks with his mouth almost completely shut to create the illusion that sound is coming from somewhere else. Most performances involve a puppet being controlled and voice-overed by a ventriloquist.

Yellow Pages

This refers to the catalog used in the 90s that contained the telephone numbers of various people and businesses which were available in your area. It was informally termed as yellow pages due to the book's iconic bright yellow pages.
