The Mamba Mentality: How I Play Quotes

Quotes

The mindset isn't about seeking a result - it's more about the process of getting to that result.

Kobe Bryant

Bryant was famous for his work ethic and for the fact that however much others were doing, he was doing more. An example of this was his dedication as a member of the Olympic team, practicing shots for two hours before training officially started. Although his goal was originally to be an NBA player, it evolved so that it became about being the best player he could be. This does not have an end date, or an end result, because it is a state that is constantly evolving.

The journey towards a goal is the part that Bryant focused upon. Working hard, practicing, going over the same drills multiple times so that there are always new ways to shoot a ball, to defend a position, to make sure that every eventuality is covered. This is also true of any life situation that is not necessarily sport related. There has to be a level of congruency in all things; the effort, the dream, the mindset all has to be focused on the same goal so that it eventually becomes a way of life rather than random efforts made in different directions.

If you see me fighting a bear, pray for the bear.

Kobe Bryant

Although this is a wry comment, made with the tongue firmly in the cheek, this statement really highlights Kobe Bryant's view that all things are surmountable even when they would seem to be heavily weighted in the favor of the opposition.

The secret to Kobe's success was preparation, and it was only after working on his preparation that he felt able to go onto the court and play in the way that he knew was within his capabilities. He did not do anything without the required amount of preparation on the court and he carried this over off court into every other area of his life. So, if we were to see him fighting a bear, we would know that he had prepared for the fight; he would have studied tape, know the bear's strengths and weaknesses, and know how to outwit him by doing something different that nobody else had tried yet in an effort to defeat him. This is one of the founding tenets of the Mamba Mentality - if you are prepared then there is nothing that can prevent you from reaching the goal and being successful.
