When Kobe Bryant tragically died in January of 2020, The Mamba Mentality: How I Play quickly went out of stock and became a #1 bestseller on Amazon. The Mamba Mentality was initially released in October 2018, though, and even then the book sold well and received very solid reviews. Publisher's Weekly loved the book, saying it is for "A wide range of hoops fans—from NBA buffs looking to understand Bryant’s approach to aspiring hoopsters seeking an on-court edge—are in for a treat." Kirkus Reviews likewise loved the book, saying that "There’s little that dedicated Kobe fans don’t already know, but the book is a visually beautiful presentation that would make an ideal gift for the Lakers fan in the house."
At its center, though, The Mamba Mentality is a book of reflection and looking back at an interesting life. Filled with photos throughout Bryant's illustrious playing career and featuring and introduction by Phil Jackson (and a foreword by Pau Gasol), Bryant takes some time to reflect in words on his life - particularly his life in basketball playing for the Lakers. In the book, Bryant details how he physically prepared before each game and breaks down pivotal plays and match-ups in his long career.
